Greatness Looks Nothing Like You Think

There is something we get wrong almost every time. We look at greatness and see a climb. Jesus showed us something different. He descended.

Not because He was weak. Not because He lacked ambition. Because His definition of greatness had nothing to do with ours. The world says you hustle for attention, you defend your reputation at all costs, you make sure your name stays clean and your brand stays visible and your credit never gets stolen. That is what power looks like to us. A constant upward scramble with elbows out.

Jesus walked right past that entire game. He made Himself nothing. Philippians puts it almost too plainly. He emptied Himself. Took the form of a servant. Became obedient to the point of death. Not a dramatic death either. A shameful one. The kind of death reserved for the lowest of the low.

Here is what stops me cold. He did not have to do any of that. He was not losing a power struggle. He was not forced into weakness. He chose it. Fully aware of what it would cost and what it would look like to everyone watching. And still He chose it.

That is not low self esteem. That is the most secure person who ever lived. You do not lay down your reputation like that unless you know exactly who you are and exactly what the Father thinks of you. The rest of us cling because we are terrified of being forgotten. Jesus let go because He trusted the Father to remember Him.

And the Father did.

Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place. Not as a reward. As a response. The One who refused to grab was given everything. The One who did not defend Himself was vindicated by the only opinion that ever mattered.

You want to be great? Stop climbing. Stop hustling for a seat at a table that is burning up anyway. Lay it down. Become nothing. And let God decide what happens next. That is the only path to a power that actually lasts. Everything else is just rearranging furniture on a sinking ship.
