If You Love God, Does It Show in the Way You Live?

It is easy to say that we love God. The harder question is whether our lives reflect it.

Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). He did not separate our love for Him from our willingness to obey Him. Love for God is more than what we feel, what we say, or what we claim to believe. It affects the choices we make when His Word challenges what we want to do.

The difficulty comes when we know what God says but start making exceptions for ourselves. We justify our decisions, explain away our behavior, or convince ourselves that what God asks of us does not quite apply to our particular circumstances. We want the comfort of knowing He loves us without always accepting the responsibility of living according to His Word.

But we cannot continually negotiate with God's instructions and expect that our relationship with Him will remain unaffected.

When we know what God asks of us but choose our own way instead, we are choosing our own judgment over His.

God's commands are not given to make our lives miserable or to take away our freedom. They show us how to live in a way that honor's Him and protects us from the consequences of choices that lead us away from His truth. Obedience does not mean we will never face hardship, and it does not mean we earn God's love by getting everything right. We are saved by grace, not by our ability to keep every command perfectly.

But grace is never a reason to treat God's Word as optional.

There is a difference between struggling to obey God and deciding that we will obey only when His instructions suit us. We will all fall short, and when we do, we must be willing to acknowledge our sin, repent, and return to Him rather than defend what we know is wrong.

The question is not whether you have been perfect. The question is what you do when God's Word confronts you with something that needs to change.

Do you listen and respond, or do you look for a reason not to obey?

If we say we love God, our lives should reflect a willingness to follow Him, even when doing so costs us something.
