The Final Reality: When God Returns and What Truly Matters

By Anthony MacPherson | The Truth About Christianity Ministries

From the beginning of creation, God has declared a truth that is absolute and unchanging: He will return. The second coming of Jesus Christ is not a theory, a parable, or a distant hope. It is reality, as certain as the rising of the sun, and it will shatter every illusion of human wisdom and power. When Christ comes, every kingdom, every system, every desire of the flesh will be exposed for what it truly is. Humanity will stand before Him, and every heart, secret, and ambition will be revealed.

Jesus said, “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30). This is literal. Every eye will see Him. Every knee will bow. Every soul will know the truth of God’s holiness.

The seriousness of this reality cannot be overstated. When He comes, grace will have reached its limit. Mercy will have finished its course. Jesus warned, “Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left” (Matthew 24:40). This division is eternal. Obedience will be revealed. Faith will be tested. The world’s pretenses will crumble in a moment.

Yet today, the majority of humanity lives in utter delusion. People cling to wealth as if it could secure them against death. They chase status, titles, and recognition as though the approval of men could stand in for the approval of God...

“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (Mark 8:36)

“Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.” (Ecclesiastes 5:15)

“Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you... You have hoarded wealth in the last days.” (James 5:1-3)

It is not wealth itself that is condemned, but the love of it. It is not career ambition that is condemned, but the placing of it above obedience. Jesus said, “You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). Those who devote their lives to recognition, comfort, and influence are building on sand. The storm of Christ’s return will reveal the emptiness of it all.

What then truly matters? The answer is eternal: obedience to God, faith in Christ, holiness, love, and the advancement of His Kingdom. 2 Corinthians 5:10 declares, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ...”

The signs of His coming are all around us. Wars, famines, earthquakes, lawlessness, and moral decay mark the last days (Matthew 24:6-12). Technology, media, and entertainment have become tools of distraction, binding people to temporal illusions. Every generation is warned, but ours is marked by the open pursuit of vanity and sin.

To live in preparation is to reject these illusions. Jesus commanded, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven...” (Matthew 6:19-21).

Now is the time to repent, to forgive, to walk in holiness, to love truth, to serve others, and to obey God. The foolish chase vanity; the wise chase the Kingdom. 1 John 2:17 reminds us, “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” (Revelation 22:12-13)

The King is coming. Every heart will be revealed. Every soul will be judged. Only obedience, faith, and righteousness endure.

“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)
