The Paycheck None of Us Can Afford to Cash
Sin has a way of making the wrong choice look reasonable. It offers what we want now and leaves us to deal with the consequences later. We convince ourselves that one compromise will not matter, that we can handle the consequences, or that we can stop whenever we choose. But sin does not change its nature simply because we have found a way to justify it.
The Bible puts it plainly in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
A wage is something earned. Paul is showing us the consequence of sin, not offering a list of exceptions for the things we consider harmless or the choices we believe we can control. Sin separates us from God, and its ultimate consequence is death. We may not see that consequence in the moment, but that does not make it any less real.
Romans 3:23 tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That leaves none of us in a position to claim that we have earned God's acceptance through our own goodness. It does not matter how respectable we appear, how much good we have done, or how our lives compare with someone else's. We all stand in need of His grace.
The danger is not only that we sin. It is that we become comfortable enough with sin to stop taking it seriously.
We excuse what we know is wrong because it suits us. We measure our behavior against other people rather than against God's Word. We can even become so familiar with Christian teaching that we know what the Bible says without allowing it to change the way we live.
But God does not leave us without hope. Romans 6:23 does not end with death. It continues with the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. What sin earns, we cannot undo through our own efforts. What God offers, we cannot earn. Salvation is His gift, made possible through Jesus Christ.
That is why the answer is not to pretend we have never sinned, hide our failures, or try to make ourselves good enough for God. It is to acknowledge our sin, turn to Him in repentance, and put our faith in Jesus Christ.
We should never mistake God's patience for permission to carry on as we please. His grace is not an excuse to ignore sin. It is the reason we can turn to Him for forgiveness and receive the new life He offers.
The question is not whether you have ever sinned. Scripture has already answered that. The question is what you will do with the truth now that you know it.
Sin pays what it owes. God offers what we could never earn. Do not trade the gift of life in Christ for what sin promises and cannot deliver.
