You Are Not The Vine. You Are Just A Branch.

Here is something that will offend everything in you that wants to be in control.

You are not the vine. You are a branch. And a branch does not produce anything on its own. It just stays connected and lets the vine do the work.

Jesus said it plainly. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

Nothing. Not less. Not something small. Nothing.

That is the part we do not want to hear. We want to hear that we can do something. We want to hear that our effort matters. We want to hear that if we just try harder, pray more, read our Bibles more, serve more, give more, then we will finally bear fruit.

But that is not what Jesus said. He said apart from Him, you can do nothing.

Not produce less fruit. Not struggle to bear fruit. Nothing.

This is the problem with most of what passes for Christianity today. It is self-improvement with religious accessories. A little Jesus added on top of our own efforts. A little grace to make up for where we fall short. A little prayer to help us achieve our goals.

But that is not Christianity. That is just using Jesus to make yourself better. And that is not what He died for.

The Christian life is not self-improvement with religious accessories. It is union with Christ. It is being so connected to Him that His life flows through you. It is not you trying to be like Jesus. It is Jesus living His life through you.

Think about what a branch does. A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It does not work harder when the season is dry. It does not try harder when the wind is blowing. It just stays connected. It just remains. It just abides.

And fruit happens. Not because the branch is trying so hard. Because the vine is flowing through it.

That is what Jesus was saying. Remain in Me. Stay connected. Keep abiding. And fruit will come. Not because you are producing it. Because He is producing it through you.

And here is the opposite truth that nobody wants to hear. If you are not connected, you can do nothing. You can go to church. You can read your Bible. You can pray. You can serve. You can give. You can do all the right things. And if you are not connected to the vine, it all produces nothing.

Not because the things are bad. Because they are disconnected from the source of life.

This is why so many Christians are exhausted. They are trying to produce fruit on their own. They are trying to be good enough. They are trying to serve enough. They are trying to achieve enough. And they are running on empty because they are disconnected from the source.

They are branches trying to be vines. And it is killing them.

So here is the hard question. Are you trying to produce fruit on your own? Are you trying to be good enough? Are you trying to serve enough? Are you running on your own effort instead of staying connected to the vine?

Because if you are, you are going to burn out. You are going to exhaust yourself. You are going to wonder why nothing is working. And you are going to miss the whole point.

The point is not your effort. The point is your connection. The point is not how hard you try. The point is how closely you abide. The point is not what you produce. The point is who you are connected to.

So stop trying to be the vine. You are not. Stop trying to produce fruit on your own. You cannot. Stop exhausting yourself trying to do what only Jesus can do.

Just stay connected. Just remain. Just abide. And let the vine do the work.

Because apart from Him, you can do nothing. But connected to Him, you can do everything He has for you. Not because you are strong. Because He is strong through you.

That is the Christian life. Not self-improvement with religious accessories. Union with Christ.
